The Svratka River is a hidden gem for anyone who wants a walk without the climbing. It’s honest — no steep hills, no scrambling, just a peaceful river valley where you can actually enjoy the scenery instead of watching your feet.

We’ve mapped out three loops that work perfectly for a half-day outing. They’re 4 to 8 kilometers depending on which one you pick, and there’s plenty of spots to stop and rest. Kids handle them well, older walkers appreciate the flat terrain, and you’ll see limestone cliffs, water-level views, and quiet corners that most day-trippers miss.

The Three Walks

Each route has its own character. Pick based on how much time you’ve got and what you want to see.

Loop 1: Račí Pískovna to Razvoj

4 km 60–90 minutes

Start at Račí Pískovna (sandy bank area) and follow the river path north. You’ll pass through quiet forest, see the water up close, and the route curves back before things get too remote. It’s the shortest loop and works well if you’ve got young kids or limited time. The riverside path is well-trodden and mostly flat.

Loop 2: Razvoj to Květnice

6 km 90–120 minutes

This one’s the middle ground. You’ll follow the river longer, see the limestone formations from different angles, and there’s a small village section where you can grab water or food. The path stays mostly flat with occasional gentle undulation. There’s a decent picnic spot about halfway through if you want to sit and watch the water.

Loop 3: Květnice to Soběšice

8 km 2–2.5 hours

The longest option takes you deeper into the valley. You’ll see wilder sections, narrower gorge passages, and fewer people. There’s a small bridge crossing midway, and the return path climbs slightly to loop back — but it’s still nothing steep. This route is best for people who’ve done the others and want a fuller experience.

What to Know Before You Go

Terrain & Conditions

The paths are mostly dirt and grass — nothing technical. In dry weather, they’re easy to walk. After heavy rain, they can get muddy, especially near the water. We’d suggest avoiding the walk immediately after rain unless you don’t mind wet boots. Spring (April–May) is ideal because water levels are normal and the forest’s green but not yet dense. Summer gets hot in the afternoon since there’s limited shade along some sections.

What to Bring

  • Water — at least 1.5 liters per person, especially in summer
  • Good walking shoes with grip (the dirt path can be slippery when damp)
  • Snacks and light food if you’re doing Loop 2 or 3
  • Sun protection — no shade for stretches of the path
  • A small first-aid kit (just in case)
  • Insect repellent if you’re walking in late spring or summer

Getting There

Parking is available at Račí Pískovna (the most popular starting point). It’s about 20 minutes from central Brno by car. Public transport works too — bus routes serve the area, though you’ll want to check current schedules before heading out. The walk itself is accessible year-round, though winter can be slippery if there’s ice.

Tips for a Better Walk

Small decisions make the difference between a rushed outing and a really memorable afternoon.

Start Early

Morning light is softer and cooler. You’ll also avoid afternoon crowds if there are any, and you’ll have the river pretty much to yourself.

Bring a Camera

The limestone formations and water reflections are genuinely photogenic. Phones work fine, but a real camera captures the detail better if you’re into that.

Respect Wildlife

You might see birds, dragonflies, or if you’re lucky, a water vole. Keep noise low and don’t approach animals. It’s their space — you’re just visiting.

Pack Out Everything

The Svratka valley is clean because walkers respect it. Take your waste with you — it keeps the place nice for everyone else.

Download a Map

Signal can be spotty in the gorge. Download an offline map of the area beforehand — it’ll help if you’re unsure about a turn.

Sit and Rest

There’s no point rushing. Find a flat rock or log, sit by the water, and just be quiet for 10 minutes. That’s what these walks are really for.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early summer (April–June) are ideal. The water’s clear, plants are coming alive, and temperatures are comfortable. Late summer (July–August) works but can be hot — the gorge doesn’t get much breeze. Autumn (September–October) is beautiful with color changes and fewer insects. Winter’s possible if there’s no ice, but the paths can be muddy and the gorge feels colder due to shade from the cliffs.

Pro Tip

If you’re planning with kids, pick a weekday in May or September. You’ll have the paths nearly to yourself, and the weather’s reliable without summer heat.

Get Out There

The Svratka River walks aren’t dramatic or challenging — and that’s exactly the point. They’re a chance to move slowly, see detail, and remember why you liked being outside in the first place. Whether you pick the short loop or the full distance, you’ll come back with clearer head and tired legs in the best way.

Pick your route, grab your water, and go. The river’s been there for thousands of years — it’ll be waiting.
